An examination of seminal literary texts written in Latin America in the nineteenth century. Novels, essays, travelogues, short stories, miscellaneous texts, and poetry will be analyzed and placed in the context of the process of nation-building that took place after Independence from Spain. A goal of the course will be to establish and define the nexus between the textual and ideological formations of 19th-century writings in Latin America and their counterparts in the 20th-century.; Crosslisted: COML and SPAN; Pre-Requisite(s): SPAN 102, placement, or consent of instructor.; Enrollment Limit: 25 Humanities (HU)
